Hey there, church family! Welcome to our new series “The Greatest Summer Ever.” This
summer isn’t just about fun events under the sun; it’s about diving deep into what true greatness
means in the kingdom of God. Spoiler alert: it’s not what you might think!
In our last series, “Give It All Away,” we learned that generosity is more than just sharing our
stuff—it’s about emptying ourselves of pride and the need for recognition. But what do we gain
when we give it all up? This series will answer that, and the twist is profound: greatness isn’t
about rising to the top; it’s about humbling ourselves.
Let’s kick things off with a question: Who’s the GOAT—the Greatest of All Time—in sports? You
probably shouted out names like Michael Jordan and Serena Williams. Why do we call them the
greatest? Their achievements, right? But when Jesus’ disciples asked Him who was the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven, He flipped their understanding upside down.
In Matthew 18:1-6, Jesus doesn’t point to a champion but instead brings a child into the mix. In
His time, children had no status; they were seen as the least. Jesus tells us to become like
children, to take the lowest seat, and to welcome those who are often overlooked. This is where
true greatness lies—serving others and embracing humility.
So, where is God nudging you to go lower? Is there a platform you need to step off, or a
spotlight you need to surrender? Remember, greatness in God’s eyes is found in the act of
service, not in being served.
As we move through this summer, let’s shift our focus from seeking recognition to embracing
humility. Who in your life might need a little love and attention that others overlook?
Let’s kick off this journey together and discover what it truly means to be great in the eyes of
Jesus.
